I know I’m a little biased, having danced for a living for a big chunk of my adult life, but I’ve always thought that the world would be a happier, more peaceful place if everybody danced. It doesn’t matter what kind of dance—swing dance, square dance, hip hop, ballet, tap, jazz—or how “good” you are, there’s a place you go when the music takes over your body. I’ve touched that place, and it’s like nothing I’ve ever felt before or since….joy, pure and simple.
When the inner dancer and the outer dancer become one, dancing can be transcendent…the mind is bypassed and the emotions move through the body unchecked. I’ve watched hundreds, maybe even thousands, of dancers over the years, and the ones who “dance from the inside out” always stand out, whether they’re onstage or taking class or just out dancing at a club. I’ve seen trained dancers that nail every step but leave me cold and “non-dancers” that take my breath away.
Flash mobs have become so common that I guess a lot of people are probably becoming jaded about them, but I don’t think I’ll ever tire of watching masses of people expressing the joy of dancing and spreading that joy to the ones who are watching. I hope you’ll take five minutes and watch this (be sure to go full screen)…and I hope it makes you smile, too.
